Ten strangers, drawn away from their normal lives to an isolated rock off the Devon coast. But as the mismatched group waits for the arrival of the hosts – the improbably named Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen – the weather sours and they find themselves cut off from civilisation. Very soon, the guests, each struggling with their conscience, will start to die – one by one, according to the rules of the nursery rhyme ‘Ten Little Soldier Boys’ - a rhyme that hangs in every room of the house and ends with the most terrifying words of all: "…and then there were none."

And Then There Were None movie full length review - And Then There Were None

I saw this listed in the Radio Times as an all-star cast three-part drama based on a novel by Agatha Christie, I was shocked to find out the title of the original novel was Te

n Little N***ers, also retitled Ten Little Indians, based on a nursery rhyme, anyway, this was something I looked forward to watching. Basically set in 1939, eight strangers have been invited to the small, isolated Soldier Island off the coast of Devon, England by a Mr. U.N. Owen and his wife, the mansion is tended by newly hired servants, but the hosts are absent. The guests are all settled and later attend dinner together, they notice the centrepiece on the table, ten figurines of soldiers. After dinner one of the servants puts on a gramophone record provided by the host, on it plays a voice accusing the ten strangers of murders, these accusations are in fact true, their kills are intended or accidental. They discover that none of them actually know U.N. Owen, this is later revealed as a shorthand for "Unknown", and it gets worse when they realise that are all ill- fated, one by one they are killed, and as one dies a soldier figurines disappears from the table. One of the guests knows the nursery rhyme "Ten Little Soldier Boys", and the deaths seem to emulate the lyrics of the song, in the way that each guests die. The nursery rhyme lyrics: "Ten little soldier boys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were nine. Nine little soldier boys stayed up late; One overslept himself and then there was eight. Eight little soldier boys travelling in Devon; One said he'd stay there and then there were seven. Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halves and then there were six. Six little soldier boys playing with a hive; A bumblebee stung one and then there were five. Five little soldier boys going in for law; One got in Chancery and then there were four. Four little soldier boys walking along the sea; A red herring swallowed one and then there were three. Three little soldier boys going to the zoo; a big bear hugged one and then there were two. Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was one. One little soldier boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were none." As each guest dies the remaining people start to suspect each other, try to predict who will be next and how they will meet their fate, and by the end there is a big unexpected reveal who is behind it all and why. Starring Douglas Booth as Anthony Marston: Accused of murdering two children by reckless driving, Charles Dance as Justice Lawrence Wargrave: Accused of murdering an innocent man by sentencing him to hang Maeve Dermody as Vera Claythorne: Accused of murdering a child in her care that she failed to save from drowning, Burn Gorman as Detective Sergeant William Blore: Accused of murdering a homosexual in a police cell, Anna Maxwell Martin as Ethel Rogers: Accused with her husband of murdering their previous employer, Sam Neill as General John MacArthur: Accused of murdering a fellow officer having an affair with his wife, Miranda Richardson as Emily Brent: Accused of murdering her maid by beating and abandoning her when she became pregnant, Toby Stephens as Doctor Edward Armstrong: Accused of murdering a patient while drunk in the operating theatre, Noah Taylor as Thomas Rogers: Accused with his wife of murdering their previous employer and Aidan Turner as Philip Lombard: Accused of murdering 21 men in East Africa for diamonds. All actors are well cast for the characters, I genuinely had no idea who was going to die in what order or how, the deaths are all clever according to the nursery rhyme lyrics, and there is a good amount of brutality and adult material to keep you engaged until the big twist ending, it really delivers what you expect from an Agatha Christie adaptation, a most watchable mystery drama. Very good!
