The Wedding Ringer movie full length review - Sometimes you just have to laugh...and I did...A LOT

When it comes to films I am never a sheep. I don't follow the flock. Now this film did extremely well financially in its first weekend as I expected it would and it is being trashed on IMDb as I expected it would.

Everyone has the same complaints that I hear time and time again...this is Hitch, we've seen this before, this wasn't funny...I don't care what any of that says. This film was hilarious. I am extremely particular about my comedy and I couldn't stop laughing. In addition to that it has a great story, a lot of heart, some amazing chemistry and this is only the second film of 2015 I've seen and it might end up in my top ten at the end of the year. This comedy had everything that I love. Strong characters, terrific buddy comedy, slapstick, physical comedy and a decent story. Have we seen it before? Sure we have. Does that make it less entertaining? NO! Its a new cast and a different take on a familiar concept. A lot of movies do that. With a film like this you have to go in not taking things too seriously and just be entertained. I honestly had no expectations going into this. I hadn't seen a trailer and I wasn't sure what I was in for but I certainly wasn't anticipating how much I loved it.

The thing that really took me by surprise was Kevin Hart. He is on my top ten list of actors that came out of nowhere that I cannot stand. I find him obnoxious and not even in the least bit funny until this film. He FINALLY showed me that he can be likable and not just a complete sarcastic ass like he usually is. His character is flawed but intelligent and very good at what he does. He was the perfect lead for this film. I was equally impressed with Josh Gad who I think is a very talented comedian but to headline a film like this is different for him. He actually proved that quirky and awkward can make for a great leading man. Now the thing that took me by surprise is the chemistry between Hart and Gad. Seriously they are phenomenal. They might be a first rate comedy duo. Maybe its just the luck of this film and these characters or maybe they're on to something. They are polar opposites and yet there is something insatiably great about their timing and personalities and the way it rolls. Its fantastic. Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting is decent as Gad's bride. She isn't a horrible person but she's not right for Gad's character and yet get that very quickly. She is a little self-centred and she plays the role well enough. Its a good start for her breakout from Big Bang Theory. The supporting cast is just fantastic. No one gets in the way of the main characters but everyone has their moment of being genuinely funny. Its such an insane and eclectic group that you can't help but laugh at how bizarre they are and yet how well they seem to fit together. Jorge Garcia (Lost fans will love the last line in the film), Dan Gill, Affion Crocket, Corey Holcomb, Ken Howard (hilarious as Cuoco-Sweeting's overbearing and foul mouthed father), Colin Kane and Alan Ritchson are all terrific. Jenifer Lewis, Cloris Leachman and Mimi Rogers are underused but they're okay in their perspective roles.

A movie like this isn't some brilliant piece of film making. But it is completely entertaining. I sat there for the entire fun and smiled and laughed and just had a terrific time. It took me away for an hour and a half and I had an amazing time with a hilarious group of people. I thought it was as good as The Hangover (better maybe?) a million times better than Bridesmaids and probably will be easily the funniest film of the year. Director and co-writer Jeremy Garelick is fairly new to the big screen but I will be the first to say he's got a great talent for comedy. Just from this alone I'm excited to see his future projects. He had a great cast and that helps but its a big cast and containing everyone and making sure toes are not stepped on and giving the film so much heart takes some real talent. Everyone needs to lighten up when it comes to comedy. This manages to be hilariously funny, dirty without being stupid, and just a whole lot of fun. I can't wait to watch it again! Go see it!! 9/10
